UPGRADE WINDOWS 7 PERFORMANCE WITH VIRTUAL MEMORY

One way to improve windows 7 performance is to add virtual memory. Virtual memory is additional memory that is taken from hard drive free space. Windows provides this facility to support performance of computer (PC or Notebook).

By default, Windows will allocate space on the disk according to the minimum requirements of Windows. By manual setting, we can increase the virtual space of computer memory. Virtual memory will be used by windows automatically when the physical memory has been fully used by the application windows. By increasing the virtual memory, we can avoid the appearance of the message "low virtual memory ...".

Here is a step to increase virtual memory on windows 7:

1. Right click on computer icon, select Properties

2. Select Advanced System Settings

3. Select the Advanced tabulation, Select the Settings button ..

4. In the Performance Options dialog box In the Virtual memory section select the Change button...

5. Uncheck "automatically manage paging file size for all drives"
Select the Custom size option. Then the contents of the initial size (MB): 1000 (adjust the capacity of free space on your hard drive). Fill in the maximum size (MB): 2000 (adjust the capacity of free space on your hard drive can be larger or smaller than the value)

6. Click Set button. Select OK

How to Run Linux Commands from Windows Cmd Prompt

We all love to have quite a bit of flexibility with the machines we work on. One such thing I love is to have access to both Windows and Linux on the same system. By this, I do not necessarily mean having both operating systems running on the machine. To experience the charm of Windows on Linux, we may use Wine and similarly, to experience the charm of Linux on Windows we may use a program like Cygwin.
In this article, I will guide you on how to use Linux commands from your Windows command prompt to make you have much more flexibility.

First Things First

In order to make this happen, you need to download and install an interface like Cygwin on your machine. During installation, you will be prompted to enter the root folder. Be careful with your choice, as this becomes your root folder with the Cygwin interface.Before we proceed to the command prompt, you may launch Cygwin and get a feel for it. The interface is shown below.

Integrate Cygwin to the Cmd Prompt

In order to make the command prompt understand Linux commands, we need to port Cygwin to cmd prompt. Navigate to the Cygwin root folder that you had selected during its installation. Go to bin folder and copy the location.Next, open your System Properties dialog box. Go to My Computer, right click and Properties. Go to the advanced tab and find the Environment variables button under it. Hit this button to find a new dialog box appear. This is where you need to configure Cygwin for the command prompt.Select New to create a new environment variable. Give it a name as “CYGWIN” and value as the bin path for the Cygwin root location.After this, select the variable named “Path” and click Edit. Navigate to the end of the variable value and add a new variable as %CYGWIN% after putting a semi colon (;).
You are now done and ready to use your command prompt with all the Linux commands.

Look into the Command Prompt

Launch your command prompt and try doing “Path”. You should see something like the image below with the addition of the Cygwin path. If not, something went wrong, and you need to check if you accomplished all steps properly.If all is fine, you will be able to use Linux commands. Try a few simple one’s out and later you may use it to the full extent. I tried commands like ls -l, cat, pwd and chmod. All seemed to work fine.

Conclusion

This is an awesome and interesting way to make Linux commands available on Windows. If you are a programmer or like to work with Linux, you will definitely love it. Not only does it bring a new set of commands but also increases the features of your cmd prompt. Moreover, it is better than just using the Cygwin interface alone.

How To Make the Windows Desktop Window Scrollable

Generally, people need multiple windows to be open at the time of work. However, they may find it distracting and confusing to see multiple windows lying one on top of the other. Situations may also surface requirements to arrange windows over the visible portion of the screen.
Though many applications allow real estate management of the screen, they do not provide much of an area to work with. Further, it requires a lot of manual work to minimize and maximize a single window while others sit in the background.
Windows Slider comes in as a solution to all these issues by allowing you to extend your screen infinitely towards the left and right.

What is Windows Slider?

Windows Slider is a desktop management application which extends the desktop width infinitely on both sides. It lets you open any number of windows and applications on the desktop and lets you slide the screen to access them without even worrying about minimizing and maximizing. Follow the link to download and install Windows Slider.

How to Configure?

Once you have installed Windows Slider, you will find it residing in the system tray. Right click on the icon to launch its menu.
Select the Configure option to launch the configuration window. There are basically five checkable options. These help you select the method you want to use for sliding your screen. While the first options are for the mouse interface, the other three are sets of hot keys. The second one comes disabled by default.

How to Slide Desktop?

The easiest option is the “Slide by Mouse” option. To slide the screen left and right, move the mouse pointer to the center of the edge respectively. If you have the “Touch-friendly Sliding” option checked, you will find a scroll appearing at the bottom of the screen. To use this, you must hold the right click and drag/scroll in the desired direction.
For keyboard users, they have a set of hot keys:
  • Ctrl-Alt-Q for left and Ctrl-Alt-W for right
  • Ctrl-Alt-Z for centering on active window
  • Alt-Tab for switching windows
The hot keys combinations are editable by launching the configuration window.

Conclusion

One reason that made me use this application was that I no longer had to worry about minimizing and maximizing windows. I could open as many windows as I liked on my desktop without operlapping. Switching over windows was just a scroll away.
Give it a try and let us know what you think in the comments.

Stardock Gives You a Windows 8 Appbar Experience

If you have a lot of applications and windows open at a time and find it difficult to manage them, navigate through or minimize/maximize, Windows 8 has a perfect solution for you. However, not all of us will get a chance to experience this until Windows 8 is publicly released.
One way to try out some of the Windows 8 features is to use Stardock. It emulates the Windows 8 metro interface and adds in a visual bar of apps onto the side of your screen.

First Things First

Stardock has a beautiful interface and is just perfect to manage tabs of open applications. Apart from this, it allows us to tile lists of application that we frequently use for quick access. Follow the link to download and install Stardock. When you are done and launch the application for the first time, it shows a how to use page.
This is a great summary of the tool. You may scroll the list up/down, scroll pages right/left and more.
By default, the visual bar shows two pages named “apps” and “my tiles”. The former will show all open application and windows while the latter is configurable to add in links to other apps and folders.

How to Use Stardock?

The startup page says a lot. It also shows a list of tips to help you. You may again look at these by right clicking on the appbar. For every open window, the bar will show a preview. You may hit on any one to open or hit the cross to close it. To pull in an app drag and drop it and the page.
There are a couple of right click options. The top of the bar, where the page name resides, will show options to rename, delete or configure the behavior of a page.
A right click on any window preview will provide options to close, minimize or restore the window. The option on recent documents shows the list of documents opened recently.
Doing the same on a tiled application will show a shortcut link, unpin and rename options.
Right clicking on a blank space will let you configure the entire appbar or launch tips and how to use pages.

Configuration and Settings

Stardock Tiles have four basic configurable settings. With pages, you may defer page settings or edit existing profiles. There is a list of appearance settings like colors, icon, caption etc. Then, the size and location option lets you place the bar on any of the four edges and lets you choose the bar size ranging between tiny to extra large.

Conclusion

Stardock is a good app to try if you want to get a preview of the Windows 8 metro interface. In addition to that, it is a solid app management application.

How To Make Your Own Dynamic Home Page Using PHP

we are going dynamic, i.e. every part of your web page, header, footer, body, menu, etc are going to change dynamically. To do so we are going to load separate html file in a single html page.
Refer to the chart below for more clarification.

Index.php is the main page which must be loaded by the visitor. Header.html, menu.html, post.html are the Head banner, Menu bar and Posts/articles respectively in separate HTML file. Whilist style.css is the CSS style for all the pages that will be loading in index.php.
Simply we’ll load all the files in index.php.
Let’s start designing the layout for index.php using HTML.
<html>
<head>
<title> Page 1 </title>
</head>
<body>
Header for the web page
<!– Table for Main Body –>
<table border=”0″ width=”100%” cellspacing=”0″ cellpadding=”2″>
<tr>
<td valign=”top” align=”left” width=”90″>
Menu bar at top for page
</td>
<td width=”1″ bgcolor=”lightskyblue” valign=”top”>  </td>
<td valign=”top”>
Main content or article for your home page.
<br> <br>
Same menubar at bottom
</td>
<td width=”1″ bgcolor=”lightskyblue” valign=”top”>   </td>
</tr></table>
</body></html>
I used simple technique of tables to layout the index.php.
Now the layout is ready and we got the maps to assign the specific header, post, menus etc.
Let’s assign the specific file to the specific address.
<html>
<head>
<title> Home Page </title>
<link rel=”stylesheet” href=”style.css”/>
</head>
<body>
<?php
include (“header.html”);
?>

<!– Table for Main Body –>
<table border=”0″ width=”100%” cellspacing=”0″ cellpadding=”2″>
<tr>
<td valign=”top” align=”left” width=”90″>
<?php
include (“menu.html”);
?>

</td>
<td width=”1″ bgcolor=”lightskyblue” valign=”top”>  </td>
<td valign=”top”>
<?php
include (“post.html”);
?>

<br> <br>
<?php
include (“menu.html”);
?>

</td>
<td width=”1″ bgcolor=”lightskyblue” valign=”top”>   </td>
</tr></table>
</body></html>
You can see two differences from the HTML code before and after.
First difference is, <link rel=”stylesheet” type=”text/css” href=”style.css”/> which must lie inside the <head> tag.

What it actually does is, loading the CSS style to index.php.
It’s syntax is:
<link rel=”stylesheet” type=”text/css” href=”#”/>
‘#’ refers to the location of your stylesheet document.
Another is four blocks of code:
<?php
include (“XXX”);
?>

The above code loads the specific html/php or web file wherever it is placed, it is actually a php code that’s why it is enclosed in <?php ….?> or <?….. ?>
We’ve used include (); function to call the specific file, where XXX in the example above refers to the location of the file.
Note: If all the files including sub-files contains in same directory, you don’t need to mention the URL of the file, else you must define the exact location for it.

We’ve basic layout for homepage ready. All we need is the sub-pages.
Design a good banner for your homepage using Photoshop or other Image editing software.
Create new text document with following inputs in it:
<img src=”image/banner.jpg” border=”0”/>
Save it as header.html.
Create another text file with following inputs:
<a href=”index.php”>Home </a> |
<a href=”page2.php”>Page</a> |
<a href=”page3.php”>About us</a> |
<a href=”page4.php”>Contact</a>
Save it as menu.html.
Now create a another text document where your contents will be loaded,
For example,
<h2> H2 heading for the page </h2>
Here goes the main content of your web page. You can include any information about your page here.
Example for a horizontal line = <hr>
Example using ‘class’ = ‘note’:
<span> Example using ‘class’ = ‘note’ </span>
Now let’s put in an image (that is in the same folder as this file so we don’t have to put the full path / URL
<img src=”images/anyimage.jpg” border=”0″ width=”100″ height=”65″ alt=”alternate_text”>
Save the above example as post.html
Now you have all the contents ready. Anything left is the styling part.
You can also create your own style in another text document and save it as filename.css (in this tutorial we’ll call it style.css).
Copy the code and paste it in stye.css that you’ve just created.
body {
background-color: #FFFFFF;
font-family: Arial, Verdana, sans-serif;
font-size: 18px;
}
a { font-family: Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; color: #483D8B; text-decoration: underline}
a:hover { font-family: Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; color: #000000; background-color: #FAEBD7}
h1 { font-family: Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 36px; color: #000000 }
h2 { font-family: Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 24px; color: #000000 }
h3 { font-family: Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 24px; color: #000000 }
h4 { font-family: Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; color: #000000 }
h5 { font-family: Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; color: #000000 }
h6 { font-family: Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 8px; color: #000000 }
hr{ color:brown; background-color:tan; width:90%; height:2px; }
table { font-family: Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; color: #00008B; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px}
.note { font-family: Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; color: purple;
font-weight: bold;}
Save it in style.css.
I’ve applied the styling for only body, horizontal rule(hr), table and custom class named note.
Your final page will have the format similar to below:

You can add and replace the menu.html and other without opening index.php this is what makes your page handling experience some what dynamic.
Hope you liked this tutorial.

How to Make an Auto-Hacking USB Drive

How to Make an Auto-Hacking USB Drive
loading...
i
I will teach you how to make a basic Auto-Hacking USB Drive. There are probably many different variationsof this. I will be showing you the most basic.

You need two things:
1) A USB Drive devoted to this
2) The programs and files that I will show you how to make or where to get. If you have trouble making the two files that I show you how to create, they can be downloaded at the end of the Instructable.

OK PEOPLE!!!!!
THIS AUTO-HACKING USB DRIVE SIMPLY CONTAINS APPLICATIONS THAT RECOVER PASSWORDS AND SUCH. STOP LEAVING POSTS ABOUT HOW YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT GETS HACKED.

Step 1A Brief Explanation

A Brief Explanation
loading...
i
OK. If you are looking for an Instructable that will teach you how to hack the Pentagon with a 2GB USB Drive, look somewhere else. This Instructable uses a batch file, an autorun file, and downloaded programs.

The Autorun File
loading...
i
So. Here we go. We will start with the Autorun file.

This file is the one that makes the pop-up window when you plug in the USB Drive. You can use this on any USB Drive, even if it has U3 on it.

Open Notepad (I'm using Notepad++) and type the following:

(autorun)
label=(Name you want the drive to have)
icon=(Icon file).ico
open=(Batch file we will make later).bat
action=(What you want the action to be)

MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT TYPE THE ()'s! Where it says (autorun), replace the parentheses with brackets (the buttons to the right of the "p" key on the keyboard. USE THE BOTTOM BRACKETS, NOT THE TWISTY FRENCH BRACKETS!)

Save this file as Autorun.inf

Make sure that you save it immediately inside your USB Drive, not inside any sub-folders (My Computer, Autohax0r).

Also, I have used an icon (an .ico file), so the USB Drive will have a different picture than the boring standard picture. To get one of these, I advise going to http://www.iconarchive.com/ to get an .ico file (you have to specifically download it as .ico). If you do this, save the icon in the same place as the Autorun file.

The Batch File
loading...
i
We will now make the batch file that starts all the "hacking programs." MAKE SURE YOU NAME IT THE SAME AS WHAT YOU CALLED IT IN THE AUTORUN FILE!

Type this into Notepad:

@echo off
title KTX
start .\Applications\FOLDER\APPLICATION.exe
start .\CommandLine\Process.exe -k TermX.exe
start .\CommandLine\Process.exe -k WinVNC.exe
pause
goto eof

I will explain the commands used:
@echo off: Makes it so the file pops-up without showing the commands. Makes it look more professional.

title: Makes a title at the top of the batch file.

start: If you can't figure this one out, you should not be reading this Instructable.

pause: Pauses the file, waits for you to press any button.

goto: Sends the file to a different part of the script.

eof: End of file.

Also, TermX.exe is a program that my school uses to keep us out of certain websites. IT IS NOT THE FIREWALL. For info on WinVNC.exe, go to http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/winvnc.

Where it says \FOLDER\APPLICATION, you will change this in two steps.

Save this as KTX.bat, and place it in the same place (directory) as the Autorun.inf file.

Step 4The "Hacking" Programs

The "Hacking" Programs
loading...
i
«
Ok. We are now going on to the actual hacking programs. Go to http://www.nirsoft.net/, and browse the programs. If you have any different websites or programs, feel free to use them. I am using SniffPass, LSASecretsView, and WirelessKeyView. Install them, and place them and the folders they create in the same directory as all the other stuff.

Your computer might identify some as viruses, but don't worry. It only does this because some programs can find certain passwords.

Also, you might notice that I have a folder called "CommandLine." This is a VERY usefull program, and can be downloaded at http://www.beyondlogic.org/solutions/processutil/processutil.htm. There is also a hearty description at this page.

Step 5Modifying KTX.bat

Modifying KTX.bat
loading...
i
«
It is now time to go back to KTX.bat (by the way, remember that TermX.exe thing I mentioned? Well, KTX stands for "Kill TermX". Feel free to change the batch file name to whatever you want, just MAKE SURE TO ADJUST THE AUTORUN FILE, TOO!).

Go to the part of the Autorun file where it says "start .\Applications\FOLDER\APPLICATION.exe". You are going to change this. Also, add or subtract as many of this line as you need. If you have three programs to run, you need three lines of this code.

First, create a folder in the same place as the Autorun and KTX files, and name it Applications. Drag all the folders that contain the hacking programs into the Applications folder. You should come up with a directory like this:
"My Computer\AutoHax0r\Applications\HACKING FOLDERS HERE (with programs inside the folders)"

Also, you do not have to have the CommandLine in the KTX file. I just use it for my school.

Step 6All Finished!

All Finished!
loading...
i
«
Ok. This is the end of the tutorial. You should have the Autorun.inf file, the KTX.bat file, and some hacking files of your choice. To work the magic of the Auto-Hacking USB Drive, just unplug the drive in question and plug it back in. If it doesn't work, you did something wrong, because I told you how to do it right. Either that, or you have strange computer settings.

If you are confused as to how to make the batch file or the Autorun file, download them here.

How To Speed Up Your PC(Computer) Top 10 Tips To Speed Up Your Computer

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I’ve focused here on the ones which are simple to do and won’t cause problems if you get it wrong, rather than listing registry tweaks etc.
1. Disable Indexing Services
Indexing Services is a small little program that uses large amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexes and updates lists of all the files that are on your computer. It does this so that when you do a search for something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the index lists. If you don’t search your computer often, or even if you do search often, this system service is completely unnecessary. To disable do the following:
  • Go to Start
  • Click Settings
  • Click Control Panel
  • Double-click Add/Remove Programs
  • Click the Add/Remove Window Components
  • Uncheck the Indexing services
  • Click Next

2. Optimise Display Settings
Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can waste system resources. To optimise:
  • Go to Start
  • Click Settings
  • Click Control Panel
  • Click System
  • Click Advanced tab
  • In the Performance tab click Settings
  • Leave only the following ticked:
  • Show shadows under menus
  • Show shadows under mouse pointer
  • Show translucent selection rectangle
  • Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
  • Use visual styles on windows and buttons
3. Speedup Folder Browsing
You may have noticed that everytime you open my computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing significantly:
  • Open My Computer
  • Click on Tools menu
  • Click on Folder Options
  • Click on the View tab.
  • Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
  • Click Apply
  • Click Ok
  • Reboot your computer
4. Disable Performance Counters
Windows XP has a performance monitor utility which monitors several areas of your PC’s performance. These utilities take up system resources so disabling is a good idea.
To disable:
  • download and install the Extensible Performance Counter List
  • Then select each counter in turn in the ‘Extensible performance counters’ window and clear the ‘performance counters enabled’ checkbox at the bottom.button below
5. Improve Memory Usage
Cacheman Improves the performance of your computer by optimizing the disk cache, memory and a number of other settings.
Once Installed:
  • Go to Show Wizard and select All
  • Run all the wizards by selecting Next or Finished until you are back to the main menu. Use the defaults unless you know exactly what you are doing
  • Exit and Save Cacheman
  • Restart Windows
6. Optimise your internet connection
There are lots of ways to do this but by far the easiest is to run TCP/IP Optimizer.
  • Download and install
  • Click the General Settings tab and select your Connection Speed (Kbps)
  • Click Network Adapter and choose the interface you use to connect to the Internet
  • Check Optimal Settings then Apply
  • Reboot
7. Optimise Your Pagefile
If you give your pagefile a fixed size it saves the operating system from needing to resize the page file.
  • Right click on My Computer and select Properties
  • Select the Advanced tab
  • Under Performance choose the Settings button
  • Select the Advanced tab again and under Virtual Memory select Change
  • Highlight the drive containing your page file and make the initial Size of the file the same as the Maximum Size of the file.
Windows XP sizes the page file to about 1.5X the amount of actual physical memory by default. While this is good for systems with smaller amounts of memory (under 512MB) it is unlikely that a typical XP desktop system will ever need 1.5 X 512MB or more of virtual memory. If you have less than 512MB of memory, leave the page file at its default size. If you have 512MB or more, change the ratio to 1:1 page file size to physical memory size.
8. Run BootVis – Improve Boot Times
BootVis will significantly improve boot times
  • Download and Run
  • Select Trace
  • Select Next Boot and Driver Trace
  • A Trace Repetitions screen will appear, select Ok and Reboot
  • Upon reboot, BootVis will automatically start, analyze and log your system’s boot process. When it’s done, in the menu go to Trace and select Optimize System
  • Reboot.
  • When your machine has rebooted wait until you see the Optimizing System box appear. Be patient and wait for the process to complete

9. Remove the Desktop Picture
Your desktop background consumes a fair amount of memory and can slow the loading time of your system. Removing it will improve performance.
  • Right click on Desktop and select Properties
  • Select the Desktop tab
  • In the Background window select None
  • Click Ok

10. Remove Fonts for Speed
Fonts, especially TrueType fonts, use quite a bit of system resources. For optimal performance, trim your fonts down to just those that you need to use on a daily basis and fonts that applications may require.
  • Open Control Panel
  • Open Fonts folder
  • Move fonts you don’t need to a temporary directory (e.g. C:FONTBKUP?) just in case you need or want to bring a few of them back. The more fonts you uninstall, the more system resources you will gain.

How to Write a Windows XP Driver

Summary: This document describes the steps you should take to create a Microsoft® Windows® XP driver for your device. To create a Windows XP device driver:
  • Install the current Windows DDK. Read the system requirements and installation instructions in the stand-alone Getting Started HTML file supplied with the DDK.
  • Read Getting Started with Windows Drivers. This document guides you through the planning and decision-making process involved in making a Windows device driver from design through distribution. You should also look through the DDK documentation for device-type-specific information.
The DDK documentation set has the following device-type-specific nodes:
  • Battery Devices
  • Display and Print Devices
  • IEEE 1284.4 Devices
  • Interactive Input Devices
  • Modem Devices
  • Multifunction Devices
  • Network Devices and Protocols
  • Parallel Ports and Devices
  • Serial Ports and Devices
  • Smart Card Devices
  • Still Image Devices
  • Storage Devices
  • Streaming Devices (Video and Audio)
  • Devices Requiring VDDs
  • IDE bus are described in System Support for Buses. Driver development for most device types also requires a strong understanding of Windows operating system fundamentals, which are described in Kernel-Mode Driver Architecture.
  • Look through the driver source code provided with the DDK for a sample that represents your device type. Use the sample code where possible, modifying it for your device's specifics.
  • The sample code can enhance your understanding of Windows XP driver implementation requirements and speed your development time.
  • Compile and build your driver. This should be done using the Build utility and not some other compiler, because the Build utility has certain features that are necessary for driver development.
  • Obtain a checked build of Windows XP, so that you can test and debug your driver using free and checked system builds.
  • The checked build of Windows XP provides extensive kernel-mode debugging capabilities not available in the free build.
  • Create an INF file so that you can install and test your driver.
  • Test and debug your driver. You should use Driver Verifier, a program that puts your driver through a variety of tests, stresses, and deliberate failures in order to test its response and reliability in many extreme situations. You should also use a debugger. Microsoft provides several powerful debuggers that can monitor and debug kernel-mode and user-mode drivers.
    Using Driver Verifier in conjunction with these debuggers, on both the checked and free versions of the operating system, can be a powerful way to test your driver.
  • Provide an installation package so that customers can install devices that use your driver.
  • Submit your driver and installation package to Microsoft so that it can be digitally signed.
There are many resources available to you while developing your driver. The following sites describe some of the support available to you:
