How To Unlock an iPhone A step-by-step guide to unlocking the iPhone's SIM card and making it available to other cell carriers' networks

If you're one of the million people who've purchased an iPhone since the end of June, you probably signed up with Apple's exclusive carrier in the U.S., AT&T, when you activated your phone. That means your iPhone identifies itself to AT&T's network using an AT&T SIM card, a smart card that's located in a small tray between your iPhone's sleep/wake button and its recessed headphone jack.
But what if you're planning a trip to Europe and rather than paying AT&T to use the networks of its European partners, you want to take advantage of the favorable rates and local phone numbers offered by replacing your AT&T SIM card with a pre-paid European card? Or what if you'd prefer to use T-Mobile as your cellular provider, rather than AT&T?
In the past month several groups have announced that they've found a way to "unlock" the iPhone, allowing it to use a SIM card from any provider. (Keep in mind that this is only half the story: the iPhone uses the GSM radio band for its communications, meaning that it'll only work with providers that use the GSM network. In the U.S., that means T-Mobile and AT&T.)
In August, a group of hackers demonstrated a method for unlocking SIM cards and sold its software to resellers, who in turn began selling it to the public for as much as $100 last week.
But another group has came up with its own hack that, with the help of some free, open-source software, lets you unlock your iPhone in about an hour, free of charge. Below, I'll show you how it works - and it does work, because I've used this technique to unlock my own phone. (One important caveat: Certain AT&T-only features, such as Visual Voicemail, will not work when you're connected to other cellular networks.)
Before we get started, you'll want to disable the iTunes helper application that may get in the way of the installation. Make sure iTunes is not running, then open OS X's Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder of the Applications folder. Search for or scroll down to iTunes Helper, select it, and then click on the Quit Process button in the top left of the screen. You'll also need your iPhone, your data cable, and a Wi-Fi connection to the Internet.
(If you haven't already activated your iPhone with AT&T-and aren't planning to-you need to conduct a fake activation. To do this, you'll need to follow the excellent instructions at ModMyiPhone and download and install a program called iNdependence.)

Install AppTapp

Apple doesn't support the installation of third-party applications on the iPhone, but the enterprising developers at NullRiver have created a program called AppTapp that will let you install including chat clients, games, and other pieces of software - including those that are needed to unlock your iPhone. (For more detailed instructions on using AppTapp,
Download and install AppTapp. Once you run the program, the first thing it will do is ask what version of the firmware you're running. If you've just updated your iPhone, you probably have Firmware 1.0.2-select that and click on Continue.

Assuming all goes well, you should get a screen that begins with the words: "Congratulations! You have successfully installed AppTapp Installer onto your iPhone." You should then find a new application on the iPhone's home screen called Installer.
The next instructions will require downloading some applications from the Internet to your iPhone-so make sure your iPhone is connected to a WiFi network. Launch the Installer program, and you'll see a long list of various applications that you can install. Scroll down, then select and install-in order-Community Sources, BSD Subsystem and OpenSSH.

Perform the GSM Unlock

First, download and install Unlock.app, lockdownd, and Cyberduck.
Then go to the iPhone's General settings and set Auto-Lock to Never. Next, you'll need to get your iPhone's IP address on your local network. To do this, go to Settings: Wi-Fi and click on the blue arrow next to the network that you're connected too. Write down the IP address, as you'll need it for later.
Now, open Cyberduck and click on the Open Connection button in the top left of the window. In the connection window, type the IP address that you just noted. Make sure that SFTP (SSH Secure File Transfer) is selected, and that you are using Port 22. For the username, type root, with the password of dottie.
Once connected, navigate from /private/var/root to the main directory by choosing the / item. Next, navigate to /usr/libexec and drag the file named lockdownd (the one you downloaded earlier) into it. It will ask if you want to overwrite the existing file-click on Continue to do so.
Now, in Cyberduck, drag the Unlock file from the Mac's desktop into the /Applications folder at the top of the main window. Once that's done, turn off your iPhone and remove the SIM card, then turn your iPhone back on and choose the application on your iPhone called Unlock.
Assuming everything went smoothly, there should be a white screen that says "All files found. Ready to go. Press Start." Once you press start, it will take about 20 minutes for all the files to install.
The progress messages will appear at the top of the screen as it progress-once you see "Completed" then you're finished. Insert a new SIM card of your choosing into your iPhone. Congratulations, you've just unlocked your iPhone!
(If you're planning on using a T-Mobile SIM card in your iPhone, you'll want to modify the iPhone's settings. Follow the instructions at the bottom of the ModMyiPhone tutorial to make sure the settings you enter conform to your T-Mobile data plan.)

The aftermath

One Macworld editor tried this approach - minus the faux-activation step - on his iPhone and was able to insert a T-Mobile SIM card from a co-worker and get the iPhone up and running on the T-Mobile network, as if it were her phone.
(To swap SIM cards in your iPhone, insert an unfolded paper clip into the small hole in the top of the iPhone, next to the headphone jack. This will open the iPhone's SIM card slot, allowing you to remove your AT&T card and replace it with a different one.)
We don't know if future Apple iPhone updates will break this functionality. But if you're about to embark on a European vacation, or if you avoid downloading those iPhone updates, this method will allow you to use the SIM cards of other cellular providers in your iPhone, provided that those providers also use the GSM cellular radio frequencies.

facebook

If you have noticed, you can never open more than one Facebook user
account simultaneously in any browser. One way around this is to use the private browsing feature, but this will only let you open 2 accounts at the same time and fails if you try to open any more.
What if you need to log into more? Well, this article will tell you how to log into many Facebook accounts with a simple script.

Installing the Script

If you are a Chrome user, you can use the script directly, but if you are on some other browser, make sure your browser has the necessary add-ons, like Greases Monkey is required for Firefox, before you proceed.
Once you have everything in place, install the Facebook Switch Accounts script in your browser and restart it.

How to Run Linux Commands from Windows Cmd Prompt

We all love to have quite a bit of flexibility with the machines we work on. One such thing I love is to have access to both Windows and Linux on the same system. By this, I do not necessarily mean having both operating systems running on the machine. To experience the charm of Windows on Linux, we may use Wine and similarly, to experience the charm of Linux on Windows we may use a program like Cygwin.
In this article, I will guide you on how to use Linux commands from your Windows command prompt to make you have much more flexibility.

First Things First

In order to make this happen, you need to download and install an interface like Cygwin on your machine. During installation, you will be prompted to enter the root folder. Be careful with your choice, as this becomes your root folder with the Cygwin interface. Before we proceed to the command prompt, you may launch Cygwin and get a feel for it. The interface is shown below.

Integrate Cygwin to the Cmd Prompt

In order to make the command prompt understand Linux commands, we need to port Cygwin to cmd prompt. Navigate to the Cygwin root folder that you had selected during its installation. Go to bin folder and copy the location.Next, open your System Properties dialog box. Go to My Computer, right click and Properties. Go to the advanced tab and find the Environment variables button under it. Hit this button to find a new dialog box appear. This is where you need to configure Cygwin for the command prompt.Select New to create a new environment variable. Give it a name as “CYGWIN” and value as the bin path for the Cygwin root location. After this, select the variable named “Path” and click Edit. Navigate to the end of the variable value and add a new variable as %CYGWIN% after putting a semi colon (;).
You are now done and ready to use your command prompt with all the Linux commands.

Look into the Command Prompt

Launch your command prompt and try doing “Path”. You should see something like the image below with the addition of the Cygwin path. If not, something went wrong, and you need to check if you accomplished all steps properly. If all is fine, you will be able to use Linux commands. Try a few simple one’s out and later you may use it to the full extent. I tried commands like ls -l, cat, pwd and chmod. All seemed to work fine.

Conclusion

This is an awesome and interesting way to make Linux commands available on Windows. If you are a programmer or like to work with Linux, you will definitely love it. Not only does it bring a new set of commands but also increases the features of your cmd prompt. Moreover, it is better than just using the Cygwin interface alone.

How To Make the Windows Desktop Window Scrollable

Generally, people need multiple windows to be open at the time of work. However, they may find it distracting and confusing to see multiple windows lying one on top of the other. Situations may also surface requirements to arrange windows over the visible portion of the screen.
Though many applications allow real estate management of the screen, they do not provide much of an area to work with. Further, it requires a lot of manual work to minimize and maximize a single window while others sit in the background.
Windows Slider comes in as a solution to all these issues by allowing you to extend your screen infinitely towards the left and right.

What is Windows Slider?

Windows Slider is a desktop management application which extends the desktop width infinitely on both sides. It lets you open any number of windows and applications on the desktop and lets you slide the screen to access them without even worrying about minimizing and maximizing. Follow the link to download and install Windows Slider.

How to Configure?

Once you have installed Windows Slider, you will find it residing in the system tray. Right click on the icon to launch its menu.
Select the Configure option to launch the configuration window. There are basically five checkable options. These help you select the method you want to use for sliding your screen. While the first options are for the mouse interface, the other three are sets of hot keys. The second one comes disabled by default.

How to Slide Desktop?

The easiest option is the “Slide by Mouse” option. To slide the screen left and right, move the mouse pointer to the center of the edge respectively. If you have the “Touch-friendly Sliding” option checked, you will find a scroll appearing at the bottom of the screen. To use this, you must hold the right click and drag/scroll in the desired direction.
For keyboard users, they have a set of hot keys:
  • Ctrl-Alt-Q for left and Ctrl-Alt-W for right
  • Ctrl-Alt-Z for centering on active window
  • Alt-Tab for switching windows
The hot keys combinations are editable by launching the configuration window.

Conclusion

One reason that made me use this application was that I no longer had to worry about minimizing and maximizing windows. I could open as many windows as I liked on my desktop without operlapping. Switching over windows was just a scroll away.
Give it a try and let us know what you think in the comments.

How to Close All Tabs From The Same Website In Firefox and Chrome

Many times while I am working online no matter if I am researching on Wikipedia, browsing Facebook pages or shopping for my next gadget, I often end up opening many pages of the same website. Opening multiple tabs helps my work go faster, but after I am done, I feel like closing all of them at once.
Indeed there are option in browsers like “Close tabs on the right” or “Close all but active,” but none of these solves the exact problem I have. If you are a Firefox or Chrome user, you can install the below mentioned add-ons to get this necessary feature right away.

Firefox Users

TabCloser is a simple add-on for Firefox, which integrates the feature to close all the tabs related to a single domain. If you are browsing through Firefox, download and install the TabCloser add-on and restart your browser.
firefox tab closer
Now, next time you launch Firefox, you will see an added option to the context menu when you right click on any of the active tabs. The option will be to “Close all <x> (hostname) tabs” where (hostname) is the name of the website that’s open and <x> is the no of tabs for the domain.
A dialog box will show up to confirm the action, and once authorized, all your selected tabs will be closed instantly.

Chrome Users

Close all tabs from a site is a nifty extension for Chrome, which adds an option to close the current tab, and all other tabs from the same site. Just download and install the add-on to Chrome and next time you want to complete that task just right click on any open page from the specific domain and select close other tabs from this site.
chrome tab closer
Note: Developer has modified the above add-on to introduce an option to close non-active other tabs from the same site leaving the one with focus.

Conclusion

These add-ons indeed come in very handy when you have to close too many open tabs from a specific website instantly. The only problem I see is that, if all the pages you have opened is from a single domain then the use of these add-on will close the browser all together.

Stardock Gives You a Windows 8 Appbar Experience

If you have a lot of applications and windows open at a time and find it difficult to manage them, navigate through or minimize/maximize, Windows 8 has a perfect solution for you. However, not all of us will get a chance to experience this until Windows 8 is publicly released.
One way to try out some of the Windows 8 features is to use Stardock. It emulates the Windows 8 metro interface and adds in a visual bar of apps onto the side of your screen.

First Things First

Stardock has a beautiful interface and is just perfect to manage tabs of open applications. Apart from this, it allows us to tile lists of application that we frequently use for quick access. Follow the link to download and install Stardock. When you are done and launch the application for the first time, it shows a how to use page.
This is a great summary of the tool. You may scroll the list up/down, scroll pages right/left and more.
By default, the visual bar shows two pages named “apps” and “my tiles”. The former will show all open application and windows while the latter is configurable to add in links to other apps and folders.

How to Use Stardock?

The startup page says a lot. It also shows a list of tips to help you. You may again look at these by right clicking on the appbar. For every open window, the bar will show a preview. You may hit on any one to open or hit the cross to close it. To pull in an app drag and drop it and the page.
There are a couple of right click options. The top of the bar, where the page name resides, will show options to rename, delete or configure the behavior of a page.
A right click on any window preview will provide options to close, minimize or restore the window. The option on recent documents shows the list of documents opened recently.
Doing the same on a tiled application will show a shortcut link, unpin and rename options.
Right clicking on a blank space will let you configure the entire appbar or launch tips and how to use pages.

Configuration and Settings

Stardock Tiles have four basic configurable settings. With pages, you may defer page settings or edit existing profiles. There is a list of appearance settings like colors, icon, caption etc. Then, the size and location option lets you place the bar on any of the four edges and lets you choose the bar size ranging between tiny to extra large.

Conclusion

Stardock is a good app to try if you want to get a preview of the Windows 8 metro interface. In addition to that, it is a solid app management application.
